Location and landscape
The Hundskopf is a single vineyard within the Petersberg collection area in the municipality of Albig, in the Nierstein sub-region of Rheinhessen. The vineyards are located on a distinctive hill and/or ridge. From the west, its shape may be reminiscent of a lying dog.
Relief and soils
The site includes a south-west-facing slope. At the highest point, the vineyard and the viewing tower Auf dem Fels are located, which was inaugurated in 2001. The soils consist of calcareous loam and sand, as well as marl with a high proportion of clay. The deep, calcareous clay has a high share of clay capable of swelling, a high nutrient content and a strong level of lime.
Wines and vinification
All grape varieties are represented in the Hundskopf. Riesling is covered by a Hundskopf Riesling from Neef-Emmich. The site is associated with full-bodied, expressive wines and balanced acidity. White wines show ripe tropical fruit and stone fruit, while red wines show dark fruit and smoky spice. Noble sweet wines with documented ageing potential are also produced.
Hundskopf Riesling
The documented Hundskopf Riesling from Neef-Emmich is dry, acidity-emphasised, and characterised by citrus fruit and pineapple. It matures in large wooden barrels and/or in oak.
