Location and character
Albig lies in the hill country of Rheinhessen and is shaped by agriculture and viticulture. The municipality is documented as a wine-growing community.
Vineyard sites and soils
The vineyards of Homberg, Hundskopf and Schloß Hammerstein belong to Albig. At Homberg there are marl and pararendzina soils from tertiary marine deposits as well as limestone and rendzina soils in the area of a limestone reef. Hundskopf has calcareous, clay-rich marl and pararendzina soils, while Schloß Hammerstein is characterised by limestone and rendzina as well as marl and pararendzina soils.
Hundskopf and wine character
The Hundskopf lies on a south-west-facing slope. At the highest point, the vineyard site and the observation tower Auf dem Fels, which was inaugurated in 2001, are located. All grape varieties are represented at the site. The profile describes noble-sweet wines with ageing potential as well as full-bodied wines with balanced acidity and fruit-forward aromas in both white and red wines.
History
Albig was first mentioned in 767 in a deed of gift from the Lorsch monastery, which also included a vineyard. Between 768 and 788, further gifts of vineyards, fields and other property are documented. Near the vineyard site of Schloß Hammerstein, remains of a Roman villa rustica were discovered, the ruins of which were apparently interpreted as a medieval castle and contributed to the naming of the vineyard site.
