Location and Landscape
The Hohenberg, officially Pfaffenhofener Hohenberg, is located in Pfaffenhofen in Württemberg. The vineyard site classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® comprises 52 hectares. It lies on a warm slope facing south, with a south-easterly to south-south-westerly aspect, at an altitude of 220 to 290 metres and with slope gradients of 15 to 60 percent.
Soils and Cultivation
The documented soils consist of gypsum Keuper and reed sandstone. In the lower area, gypsum Keuper predominates, while reed sandstone is described in the upper third. Viticulture is carried out sustainably, using exclusively organic fertilisation and targeted cover cropping to preserve soil health.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
As classified grape varieties, Lemberger, Riesling and Spätburgunder are listed. In the producer documentation, wines made from Grauburgunder and Samtrot are also recorded. Documented are dry wines from Lemberger, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Samtrot, as well as a sweet Riesling Auslese.
On the Maturation of Documented Wines
For a Spätburgunder, 19 days of traditional lees fermentation are given, ageing in 25 percent new and 75 percent used barriques, as well as unfiltered bottling. The Riesling Auslese was produced from highly ripe grapes, left on the mash for 20 hours and spontaneously fermented cool over more than four months.
