Location and landscape
Zaberfeld is a municipality in the south-western district of Heilbronn. It lies in the Zabergäu between Stromberg and Heuchelberg and belongs to the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. The municipality comprises Zaberfeld, Michelbach, Leonbronn and Ochsenburg.
Relief and soils
The terrain ranges from about 210 metres above sea level on the Zaber up to approximately 411 metres on the Stromberg. The Zaber valley separates the surrounding hill ranges. Zaberfeld lies in the Keuper hills of the Stromberg-Heuchelberg landscape; near Ochsenburg, relatively thin loess and loess-clay soils are also found.
Vine growing
Vineyards are located on south-facing slopes near Zaberfeld, Michelbach and Leonbronn, and on the Ehmetsklinge reservoir. In the vineyard Fronhälde at the Ehmetsklinge, a wine education trail is documented. According to the Baden-Württemberg system for classifying vineyards, Zaberfeld belongs to the Großlage of Heuchelberg in the Württembergisches Unterland area. The single vineyard Hohenberg includes, in addition to Zaberfeld, Michelbach on the Heuchelberg, Pfaffenhofen and Weiler an der Zaber.
History
The exact founding date of Zaberfeld is unknown. Its origins are thought to date back to around the tenth century; in 1321, the transfer from the lords of Magenheim to Baden is documented. The present-day municipality was formed in 1975 through the merger of Zaberfeld, Michelbach, Leonbronn and Ochsenburg. Historically, the town was shaped mainly by agriculture and occasionally carried out wine growing.
