Location
Herbstthal is a legally defined vineyard site in Karlstadt-Wiesenfeld in the Middle Main area of the Franconian wine-growing region. The site is located to the west of the River Main and near Karlstadt. Wiesenfeld belongs to the region Franken.
Topography and soil
The south-facing slope is considered extremely dry. The soil cover is extremely thin; immediately beneath it lies solid, pure shell limestone.
Historical viticulture
Historically, Herbstthal was planted with vines and fully stocked until before the Second World War. The remaining vineyard plots were cleared up to the end of the 2010s. Viticulture was abandoned due to the remote access, the high cost of cultivation and the severe drought stress.
Silvaner from Herbstthal
Silvaner is documented by a Herbstthal wine by Stefan Vetter from 2015. The wine was completely fermented, had 9.5 % alcohol and was made without any sulphur addition using a natural wine fermentation process. In the Franconian vineyard register, Herbstthal is listed as a vineyard site that is not part of a named large site.
