Location and Classification
Heiligenberg is a registered wine-growing site in the locality of Zeilitzheim in the municipality of Kolitzheim. It lies in the Volkacher Mainschleife area in the wine-growing region Franken.
Topography and Soils
The vineyard site is oriented to the south-southwest and has an average slope of 12 per cent. The surrounding area is characterised by shell limestone soils with a light covering of loess loam.
Climate and Grape Varieties
Heiligenberg lies in the Maingau climate zone, which is described for the area around Zeilitzheim as one of the warmer climate zones in Germany. The most important grape varieties mentioned are Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus.
Area and Designation
For the year 2019, the vineyard area is given as 17 hectares; an earlier figure from 1993 stated 36 hectares. Wines from the site have been marketed under the name Zeilitzheimer Heiligenberg since the 1970s. The geographical designation may be used when at least 85 per cent of the grapes come from the designated area.
