Location and Classification
Haselstaude is a legally defined single vineyard site in the wine-growing region of Breisgau. The designation comprises Kippenheim, Mahlberg and Sulz. The vineyard lies above the Maria-Frieden chapel in Kippenheim, on the foothills of the Black Forest, overlooking the Upper Rhine plain.
Climate and Soils
The south-facing slope and the described sunny vineyard terraces receive morning sunshine and cooling evening winds. Haselstaude belongs to Breisgau, which the local winegrowers’ cooperative describes as one of Germany’s warm climate zones. The soils consist of calcareous loess and clay over mineral-rich limestone; in addition, loess and weathered Muschelkalk limestone are also mentioned. A geological exposure is assigned to the Lower Muschelkalk.
History
In Haselstaude, according to the municipality of Kippenheim, wine has been grown for at least since the 14th century. Historical wine production included tithes paid to monasteries, in particular to Ettenheimmünster, as well as to local noble landowners.
Grape Varieties and Wines
The location is associated with Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Sankt Laurent and Regent. Fruit-forward wines are documented, as well as dry Kabinett wines from Weißburgunder, Riesling and Spätburgunder. Spätburgunder is produced from grapes from Haselstaude. Special quality is hand-harvested; vinification is carried out by the cellar master at the Badischer Winzerkeller in Breisach.
