Location and landscape
Mahlberg is located in the southern Ortenau between the foothills of the Black Forest and the Rhine plain in the Upper Rhine Graben. The town belongs to the region Baden. The municipal area has a medium relief energy and extends from about 157 to 497 metres above sea level. The Kapuzinerbach runs through it from the north-west to the south-east, while the St.-Andreas-Graben borders the built-up area.
History
Mahlberg was first mentioned in documentary records in 1218. In 1221, Friedrich II granted the town city and market rights.
Climate
In the municipal climate adaptation assessment, increasing heat, drought, low water levels, water scarcity and heavy rainfall events are cited as relevant local climate risks.
Viticulture
Mahlberg is connected with a viticulture landscape in the foothills of the Black Forest. In the vineyard Haselstaude, around 70 hectares of vines were listed in 2017, which were farmed by a cooperative with 160 winegrowers and winemakers. Documented wines include white, red and rosé versions, including dry and semi-dry wines as well as Kabinett and Spätlese. For a jubilee wine project in 2017, hand-picked Weißburgunder grapes from the Mahlberg district were used. From around 6,000 kilograms of grapes, 5,000 litres of wine were intended to be produced, to be developed separately from other sites and grape varieties exclusively as semi-dry.
