Location and Classification
Graukatz is a single vineyard in Tiefenthal in the Bingen sub-region of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Rheingrafenstein. The wine-growing profile covers an area of 8 hectares.
Altitude and Soils
The site lies in a valley at 200 to 260 metres above sea level and is exposed to the south-east. As a soil type, Rotliegend/Rigosol is documented with calcareous loam and deposits of fine sand in the upper layer of red earth. The shallow to medium-depth soil is rich in lime, stony and has a clayey loam composition, stores little plant-available soil water, warms up well and has a medium rooting depth.
Wine Character
With Graukatz, herbal, finely spicy and almost floral notes are associated with mineral components, as well as aromas of peach, apricot and honeydew melon. The wines show a lively acidity, can sometimes feel closed off in their youth, and have potential for ageing. In the vineyard register for the 2024 harvest vintage, 3.7 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
