Location and municipality
Tiefenthal is a local municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The village lies at an altitude of about 180 metres in the Appelbach valley within the Rheinhessian Switzerland landscape and covers 1.35 square kilometres.
Vine growing and single vineyard site
Tiefenthal belongs to the Bingen wine-growing region in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The single vineyard site Tiefenthaler Graukatz is part of the Großlage Rheingrafenstein. Its soils of Rotliegend and Rigosol are shallow to medium-deep, calcareous, stony and loamy-clayey. They store only little water available to plants and absorb heat well.
History and wine profile
Tiefenthal is mentioned as Daffindal in 1051 in a certificate of ownership for the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. Later forms of the name are Dyffindal from 1297 and Dyfindail from 1323. Since 1816, Tiefenthal has belonged to Rheinhessen.
For wines from the Tiefenthaler Graukatz, herbaceous and delicately spiced notes, floral nuances, mineral components as well as aromas of peach, apricot and honeydew melon are documented. In addition, they have a lively acidity and potential for ageing.
