Location and legal classification
Grafenberg is a legally recognised single site within the Württemberg wine-growing region, in the Württembergisch Unterland area and the Großlage Heuchelberg. The designation is approved for quality wines from Württemberg. It includes areas in Gemmingen, Leingarten, Brackenheim, Schwaigern, Nordheim and Eppingen.
Topography and soils
The Schwaigern Grafenberg lies on a south-facing slope, or on a southward-facing spur of the Heuchelberg. A documented parcel there is steep and exposed to the summer warmth. In Schwaigern, there is a thick loess covering on loess marl over red Keuper marl. The Leingarten portion is characterised by warm Keuper weathering soils.
Grape varieties and wine styles
On the Grafenberg in Leingarten, Lemberger, Riesling, Trollinger and PIWI grape varieties are planted. For the Schwaigern Grafenberg, wines made from Lemberger, Trollinger, Schwarzriesling, Riesling and Gewürztraminer are documented. The site is used for red wines, rosé and Weißherbst wines, as well as sparkling wines.
Cultivation and history
A Leingarten winery has been cultivating its Grafenberg vineyards since 2009 according to organic guidelines and has been a member of Bioland since then. Cattle manure is used as fertiliser, while Shropshire sheep take care of the work among the vines. The approach in the winery is aimed at minimal intervention; documented red Grafenberg wines were also matured in barrique. The Schwaigern Grafenberg is considered a historical wine site that was developed by the Counts of Neipperg.
