Location and classification
The Goldberg is a single vineyard site within the municipal area of Undenheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Großlage Gutes Domtal and to the area of Nierstein.
Site and soils
The south-facing vineyard site lies at around 155 to 180 metres above sea level and comprises 87 hectares. As a site, it is described as being high-yielding. The soil consists of loess-pararendzina: a deep, fertile and calcareous loam soil with silty clay, good plant-available water storage, good aeration and good root penetration. The loess is described as calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages.
Wine style and grape varieties
The regional profile links wines from the Goldberg with aromas of yellow fruits, apple, peach, pear and citrus fruits. A slender, refreshing style is described, with gentle acidity, medium body and early drinkability. Documented wines include, among others, the grape varieties Portugieser, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Scheurebe, Würzer and Regent.
Documented expressions
A documented Goldberg Portugieser is a semi-dry Qualitätswein with a fresh sweet cherry character. A Goldberg Grauburgunder was made as a dry Spätlese with peach character and pronounced volume, and matured in oak barrels. According to regional classification, the term Goldberg generally expresses the appreciation for the site and does not refer to the precious metal gold.
