Location and Classification
The stony garden is an officially registered single vineyard in Überlingen in the Lake Constance winegrowing region of the Baden region. The single vineyard is assigned to the larger site Sonnenufer. In an official assignment from 2023, plot 2928 was allocated to the single vineyard Felsengarten and the larger site Sonnenufer.
Soils and Climate
The stony garden is assigned to the slopes in Überlingen and Goldbach. The medium-deep, gravelly and partly calcareous loam soils lie over marl and sandstone of the Upper Marine Molasse, which dates back to around 23 to 16 million years.
The Lake Constance’s thermal effect moderates temperature fluctuations and can favour a long, mild autumn as well as a longer frost-free growing period. Additional light reflections from the lake contribute to the site climate; for the winegrowing region, around 1,400 hours of sunshine are given from April to October.
Named Wines
The dry Überlingen Felsengarten Cuvée Blanc is produced from Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Müller-Thurgau. The dry Felsengarten Cuvée Noir is based on Spätburgunder, complemented by Cabernet and a Spätburgunder component matured in wood.
Cultivation and Maturation
For the Überlingen Felsengarten wines, intensive soil and leaf care, hand harvesting and grape selection are documented. The Cuvée Blanc is fermented in stainless steel under temperature control and developed for a longer period on fine lees. For the Cuvée Noir, part of the Spätburgunder matures in wooden casks.
