Location and climate
Überlingen is located on the north bank of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg. The lake acts as a heat store and moderates fluctuations in temperature; in addition, alpine foehn winds influence the viticulture climate. The vineyards between Lake Constance and the Bodanrück enjoy a comparatively sheltered local climate.
Vineyard sites and soils
The vineyard soils on Lake Constance include glacial terminal moraines. The Überlinger Felsengarten is described as having lighter, more sandy and mineral-rich soils. The site is documented as a single-vineyard within the Großlage Sonnenufer; in 2023, a parcel in Überlingen was assigned to this single-vineyard.
History of viticulture
Viticulture around Überlingen and Lake Constance looks back on several centuries. Before the Thirty Years’ War, the wine-growing area on the wider Lake Constance may have extended over more than 265 hectares.
