Location and Classification
The English Garden is designated as a single vineyard, Salsitzer Englischer Garten, in the cadastral district of Grana, Kretzschau. The wine-growing site is located in the Elster Valley directly by the Weiße Elster and, within the growing region Saale-Unstrut, belongs to the Schloss Neuenburg area. It is assigned to the section that is not part of any large-scale site.
The south-facing slopes offer views towards Haynsburg and the Weiße Elster. The documented soils contain weathered red sandstone (Buntsandstein) with a clay component. In the 2024 vineyard register, the single vineyard is listed with an area of 13.5491 hectares.
History and Replanting
The name Englischer Garten is already documented on a cadastral map from 1854. After the granting of replanting rights, a modern new planting began in 1998: first, 3,000 vines were planted between winter barley; in May 1999, 17,000 more vines followed. The first harvest took place in autumn 2001.
Grape Varieties and Viticulture
Among others, Müller-Thurgau, Ortega, Bacchus, Kerner, Dornfelder, Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), Riesling, Traminer, Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Schwarzriesling, Chardonnay, Gutedel and Regent are documented as grown on the site. Work in the vineyard includes winter pruning, mulching, tying in during spring, caring for the trellis frames, cleaning the trunks, leaf work and harvesting. Both machine harvesting and hand harvesting are used.
Wine Styles and Sparkling Wine Production
From the Salsitzer Englischen Garten, dry, fine, full-bodied and sweet quality wines as well as rosé and sparkling wines are documented. For base wines for sparkling wine production, hand harvesting is particularly highlighted. Traditional sparkling wine production involves a second fermentation in the bottle, riddling by hand, and maturation in the bottle.
