Vineyard site “English Garden”
The vineyard site Salsitzer Englischer Garten is located near Salsitz on south-facing slopes of the Elstertal. Its soils consist of weathered Buntsandstein with a clay component. The single-vineyard site comprises, according to the operating winery, around twelve hectares and is registered in the German vineyard register under this name.
Development of viticulture
After the granting of planting rights in 1998, the vineyard site was replanted in 1999. Initially, 3,000 vines were planted between winter barley; in May 1999 a further 17,000 vines followed. The first vintage was harvested in autumn 2001.
Varieties of grape and harvesting
Documented varieties include, among others, Müller-Thurgau, Ortega, Bacchus, Kerner, Dornfelder, white Burgundy, Riesling, Traminer, Pinot Gris, Spätburgunder, Schwarzriesling, Gutedel, Regent and Chardonnay. Part of the grapes are harvested mechanically; grapes for base wines for sparkling wine are still harvested by hand.
