Location and classification
Dornberg is a registered vineyard site in the municipality of Mainbernheim in the district of Kitzingen, Bavaria, close to the municipal boundary with Hoheim. The south-facing location belongs to the wine-growing region Franken; in terms of wine law, Mainbernheim–Dornberg is assigned to the Großlage Schloßberg in the Schwanberger Land area.
Cultivation and vines
The municipally owned vineyard covers around 0.43 hectares. It was replanted in April 2004 with 1,760 Silvaner vines and is farmed by a winemaker family. The harvest is carried out by citizens from Mainbernheim; the grapes are vinified by a winery.
Wine
The wine from the municipally owned Dornberg is marketed as a Silvaner wine under the names “Der Bernemer” or “Bernemer Dornberg”.
Historical viticulture
The field-name area Dornberg belonged to the historic wine-growing area of Mainbernheim; records from 1830 mention “im Dornberg” as one of the local vineyard plots. In the 20th century, wine-growing declined, among other things due to vine louse infestation and land consolidation, resulting in vineyards being abandoned.
