Location and urban area
Mainbernheim is a town in the Bavarian region Franconia, in the administrative district of Lower Franconia and in the Kitzingen district. The urban area covers 12.21 square kilometres.
History of viticulture
Mainbernheim was first mentioned in a document in 889. In 1834, viticulture comprised around 90 hectares, in 1895 about 50 hectares and in 1955 still 5.93 hectares. Outbreaks of phylloxera are documented for 1902; by 1907 many local vineyards had been destroyed. During land consolidation in the late 1950s, viticulture declined significantly.
Dornberg vineyard
The Dornberg vineyard is located in the Mainbernheim area near the border with Hoheim. The town replanted it in 2004 on about 4,300 square metres with 1,760 Silvaner vines. In 2022, the town vineyard covered 4,379 square metres and was cultivated on the instruction of the town. Silvaner is documented there as the most important grape variety.
Local wines
The town markets the local wine Der Bernemer as well as a Secco. Under European Union law, Franconia is a protected designation of origin for wine.
