Location and classification
The Doktor is a German single vineyard site in the district of Dexheim in the Nierstein area and belongs to the Großlage Gutes Domtal in Rheinhessen. The Landwirtschaftskammer Rheinland-Pfalz lists the site under code 720404. The 2024 vineyard register shows 180.2 hectares of planted vineyard area for Dexheim.
Soils and landscape
Within the site, rendzinas formed from limestone are found. They are shallow to medium-deep, very rich in lime, stony and sandy-loamy, well aerated and warm up well, but they offer the vines only limited rooting depth. In addition, there are pararendzinas formed from loess, which are calcareous, clayey-silty and deep, and which have a high water-retention capacity and good rooting depth.
The limestone is described as a marine sediment in connection with a limestone algae reef. The humus-rich soil layer is very thin. In earlier limestone quarries within the site, vines were replanted after centuries of extraction; abandoned quarries were acquired in the 1970s and, as part of their restoration, replanted.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Pinot varieties are considered particularly suitable for the Doktor. Documented wines come, among others, from Huxelrebe, Ortega, Weißburgunder, Faberrebe and Kerner.
Wines from the limestone areas are associated with mineral, chalky and saline characteristics; the limestone buffers the acidity. Both dry and quality wines are documented, as well as sweet Prädikat wines, including Eiswein, Spätlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese.
