Dexheim is a municipality in Rheinhessen and is described on the municipal website as a wine-growing municipality. The municipality covers around 583 hectares, of which around 166 hectares are given over to vineyard areas. The climate in the Mainz Basin is characterised by mild winters and dry summers. Relief and soils
The Dexheim-West planning area lies at about 156 metres above sea level. It is largely level and slopes gently towards the south-east into the Dexheim Graben. The subsoil consists of Pleistocene loess over Buntsandstein from the Triassic, locally supplemented by conglomerate material as well as clay and siltstone. Soils identified include Chernozem, Parabraunerde, Pararendzina, Braunerde and Rigosol; silt loam predominates.
Viticulture
In the regional planning framework, agriculture is defined as a special function of the municipality. The wine site Dexheimer Doktor is documented for Dexheim in the official Rhineland-Palatinate wine sites directory for the 2024 harvest. It is associated with loess and Pararendzina: The calcareous, deep-rooted loam soil formed from loess has a high water storage capacity, adequate aeration, a high nutrient content and good root penetration.
History
Dexheim was mentioned for the first time in 774 in a donation document referring to Charlemagne and the Lorsch Abbey. Another documentary mention dates from the year 889, when King Arnulf of Carinthia gave the church of Dexheim to the Fulda Abbey. According to local history, Roman troops used clay from the surrounding area to make bricks for their forts. In the Middle Ages, Dexheim was a free imperial village. In 1816 the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, and in 1851 it was assigned to the district of Oppenheim.
