Location and classification
Les Champs-Gains is a designated Premier Cru climat of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation on the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. The vineyard lies near Chassagne-Montrachet in France. The appellation belongs to Burgundy’s semi-continental climatic zone.
Terroir and grape varieties
A documented parcel of Les Champs-Gains is located at around 250 metres above sea level and has medium-weight soils of medium depth. For the climats of Chassagne-Montrachet, rocks from the Rauracian, Callovian and Argovian periods as well as soils of gravelly limestone, marl and sandy soils on a Jurassic base are documented. The appellation permits Chardonnay for white wines and Pinot Noir for red wines; the documented parcel of Les Champs-Gains is planted with Chardonnay.

A Lamy-Caillat parcel is listed as plot AW77, covers 1,130 square metres and was planted in 1980. For the Lamy-Caillat Les Champs-Gains, a ripening period of 20 to 28 months is indicated; bottling is carried out manually, and the wine is not filtered. The official profile of the appellation describes its white wines as round and often opulent, with floral, hazelnut, mineral and occasionally roasted or buttery notes.
Name
The name Les Champs-Gains is explained as “regain” and accordingly refers to fields that can produce a second harvest after mowing.
