Burgstall

Burgstall is a legally designated, cross-municipality single vineyard site in the Baden wine-growing region and in the Lake Constance area. It comprises the cadastral districts of Hagnau am Bodensee, Immenstaad, Kippenhausen and Markdorf; Kippenhausen is a district of Immenstaad.

The vineyards belonging to Hagnauer Burgstall lie at around 400 to 450 metres above sea level and extend from gentle slopes down to the shore of Lake Constance. The pre-Alpine maritime climate is moderated there by Lake Constance. For Hagnau, roughly 850 millimetres of annual precipitation, a mean annual temperature of 8 to 9 °C and about 1,250 hours of sunshine from May to October are documented. The soils consist of glacial moraine gravel over freshwater molasse and show varying proportions of sand, loam and gravel, as well as a high proportion of quartz-rich pebbles.

Under the name Burgstall, wines from Hagnau made from Blauer Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc), Bacchus, Regent and Müller-Thurgau are documented. The range includes dry, off-dry, mild and sweet wines, as well as red wine, rosé respectively Weißherbst (light red/white wine style), Blanc de Noirs and sparkling wine.

Since 1993, the Hagnau winemakers’ association has documented controlled, environmentally conscious cultivation with soil care, leaf work, manual selection of vines and hand harvesting. For individual Burgstall wines, fermentation and ageing in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, as well as traditional vat fermentation and maturation in wooden casks, are documented. Historical documents mention Burgstall near Hagnau in a dispute over wine and ground rent in 1573, and with 1.5 Vierling of vines and an annual wine payment in 1701.
