Location and wine-growing area
Hagnau am Bodensee is a wine-growing community on the north shore of Lake Constance in the wine-growing region of Baden in Baden-Württemberg. The vineyards extend from gentle slopes down to the shoreline.
Climate and soils
The wine-growing climate is described as pre-Alpine lake climate. Lake Constance reflects solar energy towards the nearby vineyards and moderates conditions for vines at elevations above 400 metres. During the growing season, warm föhn winds from the Alps also regularly influence the region.
The vineyard soils consist of glacial moraine gravel with loam, sand and gravel over freshwater molasse. For the single vineyard Burgstall, weathered soils from the Ice Age with a high silicon content are also described, as well as sand, loam and loess.
Cultivation
The Hagnau winegrowers’ association documents sustainable and carefully controlled environmentally friendly wine-growing. This form of cultivation has been stated since 1993 and includes reduced yields, selected grapes and selective hand-harvesting. Ten percent of the vineyard area is farmed as selection sites; for older vines, the yield there for selected premium wines is limited to 45 hectolitres per hectare.
Burgstall and history
Hagnauer Burgstall is classified as a single vineyard site. Documented wines from the site include, among others, Grauer Burgunder, Weißen Burgunder, Bacchus, Blauen Spätburgunder, Regent, Auxerrois, Goldmuskateller and Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs. Dry white wines are represented, along with a semi-dry Bacchus, a mild Spätburgunder and a dry Regent; the wines mentioned are classified as Qualitätswein. For the Burgstall Grauburgunder, temperature-controlled fermentation and maturation in stainless-steel tanks are given.
The Hagnau winegrowers’ association was founded on 20 October 1881 by the priest Dr. Heinrich Hansjakob.
