Location and Terroir
The hillside slope is a vineyard site in Grunbach, a district of Remshalden in the Remstal and within the wine-growing region Württemberg. The Grunbacher Berghalde is documented as a steep, wind-exposed site, oriented to the south.
Vines and Cultivation
The subsoil is documented as multicoloured marl (Bunter Mergel) for the late Burgunder and Lemberger plantings. In the Berghalde, among other varieties, Zweigelt, Trollinger, Muskat-Trollinger, Syrah, Spätburgunder, Merlot and Lemberger are grown.
The vineyards of Doreas in the Grunbacher Berghalde and at the Grunbacher Klingle are cultivated organically and monitored according to ECOVIN standards. Some vines are more than 40 years old; a strong reduction in yield is also documented. A new Zweigelt vineyard was still, in 2022, in the three-year conversion to organic viticulture and was not yet ECOVIN-certified at that time.
Wines and Maturation
The documented wines from the Berghalde include dark, powerful and tannin-rich Zweigelt; powerful and softer Spätburgunder; powerful and spicy Lemberger; concentrated Merlot; and dark, powerful Syrah. Maturation methods include long maceration times on the skins, barrel ageing, and unfiltered bottling. The 2019 Zweigelt was aged for 30 months in barrique, the 2019 Merlot for two years. The 2019 Spätburgunder underwent cold maceration, barrique ageing and unfiltered bottling; the 2019 Syrah a skin-fermentation (mash fermentation), barrique ageing and unfiltered bottling.
