Location and Landscape
Remshalden is a municipality in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg and lies in the Remstal to the east of Stuttgart. The municipality includes Grunbach, Geradstetten, Hebsack, Buoch and Rohrbronn; Grunbach, Geradstetten and Hebsack are the wine-growing villages. The Buocher Höhe reaches 519 metres and is the highest elevation in the Stuttgart region.
Vineyards and Soils
The vineyards form a contiguous strip on the slopes above the Remstal and extend from Hebsack to Grunbach. With about 154 hectares, the area under vines accounts for almost ten percent of the municipality’s area. A geological trail above Grunbach documents Keuper formations and the soils formed from the coloured marls of the Keuper. In the Remstal, the alluvial soils of the river valley appear opposite them.
Climate and Winegrowing
Mild winters, hot summers and sunny slopes shape the conditions in the Remstal that are favourable for winegrowing. Winegrowing in Remshalden has been documented since the beginning of the eighth century. The vineyards belong to the winegrowing region Württemberg; the former area “Remstal-Stuttgart” was officially renamed “Remstal”.
Grape Varieties and Cultivation
Trollinger is the best-known red grape variety, and Riesling the leading white grape variety in Remshalden. Local red wines are produced from Trollinger, and white wines from Riesling. The annual winegrowing activities include pruning in winter and spring, as well as harvesting in autumn. During this period, work is also carried out in the cellar; a joint pressing mill is operated via the local winegrowing association, and marketing is carried out through the Remstalkellerei.
