Wittnau

Location and landscape

Wittnau is situated about 7 kilometres south of Freiburg im Breisgau in the Hexental. The municipal area covers 504 hectares and stretches from around 259 metres above sea level to more than 400 metres in the area of Wittnau and Biezighofen. The municipality lies between the Schönberg and the Black Forest; Kapuzinerbuck, Großer Buck and Hasenbuck shape the pattern of settlement.

Viticulture and history

Even to this day, the three elevations are used for viticulture. Wittnau is described by the municipality as one of the highest-lying wine-growing locations in Baden. The side facing the Schönberg has more favourable soils and climatic conditions than the side of Biezighofen. Wittnau was first mentioned in documents in the year 786 in a donation deed of the St. Gallen monastery. The Kapuzinerbuck is a wine-growing site of Wittnau within the Markgräflerland wine-growing region.

Wines and production

The Winterhalter winery documents, from its own cultivation, Gutedel, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder in connection with wines from the Wittnau Kapuzinerbuck. The range includes dry Gutedel, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Spätburgunder Rosé and Spätburgunder red wine, as well as a dry Weißburgunder sparkling wine and the dry Merlot Hirschenwirts “Wilderertröpfle”. The grapes are pressed on site; the wines and sparkling wine mature in the winery’s own cellar. The Merlot is matured in cask.
