Weinolsheim in Rheinhessen
Weinolsheim is an Ortsgemeinde in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Selz. The municipality comprises 593 hectares, of which 529 hectares are devoted to land and forestry. Rheinhessen is one of the warmest and driest wine-growing regions in Germany.
History
The first documented mention of Weinolsheim by name can be found in a deed of gift from the Lorsch Abbey dated 22 October 789.
Vineyard sites and soils
The Hohberg vineyard site is named after a high hill. Its soils consist of loess and pararendzina with calcareous, deep, light loam and clayey silts. The Kehr vineyard site is associated with a bend or curve of a path and has been documented since 1465. Marl and loess pararendzina occur there.
Categorisation and wine style
Hohberg and Kehr are single-vineyard sites in the area of Nierstein and in the large-scale vineyard Gutes Domtal within the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. Kehr is planted with various grape varieties; Riesling is the most important, the grape variety associated with the wines. The wines, especially Rieslings, are described as full-bodied, dense, fruity and juicy.
