Location and classification
Kehr is a single vineyard site in the cadastral area of Weinolsheim. It belongs to the larger site of Gutes Domtal and to the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. The official vineyards directory for 2024 lists 90.2 hectares of vines planted for this site. Kehr was first mentioned in documents in 1465.
Soil and terrain
The documented soils include marl-pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits, as well as loess-pararendzina made from calcareous dust blown in during the ice ages. In addition, heavy clay, loam and lime soils are given as subsoils. The site includes a vineyard hut with seating and a view.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From Weinolsheimer Kehr, Riesling in dry wines is documented, as well as it as Spätlese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. The wines of the site, especially the Rieslings, are described as full-bodied, dense, fruity and juicy. In addition, Frühburgunder from the site is documented in the form of an edelsüße Beerenauslese from the 2018 vintage, which has 8.5% by volume of alcohol.
Documented winemaking
The dry Weinolsheimer Kehr Riesling from the 2023 vintage from the Manz winery comes from a selection of small Riesling berries, was fermented with natural yeasts and is specified with a yield of 25 hectolitres per hectare. For the Frühburgunder Beerenauslese from 2018, it is documented that the grapes were dried on the vine in the sun before harvest.
