Location and landscape
Weiler near Bingen lies on the heights above the Nahe confluence at the foot of the Hunsrück, about two kilometres from Bingen. The municipality comprises around 2,283 hectares. Fields and meadows are located mainly in the north and west, while in the east extensive vineyards stretch out. Part of the approximately 2,000-hectare Binger Wald north of the settlement also belongs to the municipal area.
Winegrowing on the Nahe
Weiler near Bingen belongs to the Nahe winegrowing region, which is described as mild and comparatively dry. For the vineyard sites in the lower Nahe valley between Bingen and Bad Kreuznach, in particular Burgunder varieties and red grape varieties are mentioned. In the Weiler cadastral district, Abtei Rupertsberg with 1.6 hectares, Klostergarten with 25.1 hectares and Römerberg with 7.4 hectares are registered.
Abtei Rupertsberg
The Abtei Rupertsberg site is registered across-parcel-wide with parcels in Weiler near Bingen and in Bingen on the Rhine. It has a southerly aspect, lies at around 120 to 180 metres above sea level, and has a slope of 50 to 60 percent. As soils, weathered grey slate and phyllite slate are documented; the classified grape variety of the VDP site Binger Abtei Rupertsberg is Riesling.
Historical reference
The name Weiler is first documented in a charter from 823. Archaeological finds indicate an earlier settlement and Roman activities. A Roman military and trade road ran through Weiler from Mainz via Bingen towards Trier; the remains of a Roman villa rustica lie about three kilometres from the municipality. In 1147, Hildegard founded the Rupertsberg monastery. The municipal history also records a monastery estate in Weiler connected with the Rupertsberg tradition.
