Location on the Main
Untereisenheim is a district of the market town of Eisenheim in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria. The village lies on the Main at the beginning of the Volkacher Mainschleife in the wine region Franconia.
Viticulture and Landscape
Vineyards surround the village. The Untereisenheim Sonnenberg stretches above the village in a south-easterly and easterly direction and borders in the north on the Obereisenheimer Höll. The Sonnenberg covers about 110 hectares. The vineyard soils are characterised by shell limestone (Muschelkalk) and Lettenkeuper.
Grape Varieties and Wine Sites
Winegrowing and fruit growing shape Untereisenheim and Obereisenheim. Around 60 winegrowing families cultivate together more than 230 hectares in both districts. The wine site Berg is assigned to the larger winegrowing area Kirchberg and covers about 33 hectares. For it, loess marl, shell limestone (Muschelkalk) and Lettenkeuper are documented, as well as the grape varieties Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus.
History
The settlement was first mentioned in 788 as Isanesheim in a donation deed to the Fulda monastery. On 1 May 1978, the independent municipality of Untereisenheim joined with the market municipality of Obereisenheim to form the market town of Eisenheim.
