Location
Tauberzell is a district of the municipality of Adelshofen in Bavaria and lies directly on the Tauber between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Bad Mergentheim. The place belongs to the wine region Franken.
Wine-growing history
Wine-growing in Tauberzell has been documented locally for more than 800 years. The wine-growing area Hasennestle is listed in the Bavarian register of monuments under the sites Unterer Tauberweg, Berge and Untere Setzberge, and has already been cultivated since the 13th century.
Location and grape varieties
The vineyard paths of Hasennestle rise from the village via the lower, middle and upper vineyard path. The historical site previously had dry-stone walls and larger stone terraces; in 1983 and 1984 the vineyards were replanted. In Tauberzell, among others, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Schwarzriesling and Regent are grown.
Climate and wine style
The Bavarian Tauber wine-growing region has a continental climate with severe winter frosts, hot summers and up to 1,550 hours of sunshine on average per year. For Hasennestle, Silvaner, Bacchus Kabinett, Johanniter and the red wine as the “Roter Wengert” are documented. In a Hasennestle Silvaner, around 30 per cent of the grapes were fermented with stems in the open vat; the remaining must was spontaneously fermented in the large wooden cask on the full lees and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur.
