Location and municipal area
Simmertal is a local municipality in the region Nahe with a total area of 808 hectares. The municipal centre lies at 190 metres above sea level, the highest point of the cadastral area at 432 metres. 45 percent of the area is wooded, 37 percent is used for agriculture.
Landscape and climate
In Simmertal, the Simmerbach reaches the Nahe. The Simmer valley forms the transition from the breakthrough valley of the Soonwald into the broader Kirn Nahe valley. In the landscape, remnants of Hunsrück slate emerge between the quartzite ridges of the Soonwald. For the further Hunsrück, a mild suboceanic climate is given, with average annual temperatures of 7.0 to 10.0 °C and annual precipitation of 600 to 1,200 millimetres.
Historic wine growing
Until 1971, the municipality bore the name Simmern under Dhaun. For the year 1774, the chronicle records two morgen of vineyard area in the agricultural property of the former estate; from the remaining area, an average of about 1,000 litres of wine was produced. The estate also received from local farmers a grape or wine tithe of three Ohm up to one Fuder, on average about 900 litres.
Vineyard site Herrenzehntel
The vineyard site Herrenzehntel is listed in the official register of vineyard sites as a Nahe single-vineyard (Einzellage) with register number 511342 and an area of 29.5 hectares. It is classified as a hamlet of Monzingen and is not assigned to Simmertal. The name, as does the local tithe road, also refers to earlier obligations to pay tithes.
