Location and landscape
Ravensburg is located in Württemberg between Lake Constance and Allgäu at the eastern edge of the Schussen basin. The town’s territory belongs to the Lake Constance moraine landscape and comprises the deeply incised Schussen basin as well as hilly moraine slopes.
Soils and climate
In the Schussen basin there are basin clays as well as meltwater sands and gravels. On the western high ridges, tertiary Upper Freshwater Molasse comes to the surface. The nearby Lake Constance stores heat and releases it to the surrounding area up to January.
Wine-growing history
Wine-growing has been documented in Ravensburg since the Middle Ages. Historically, the Weißenau monastery owned extensive vineyard areas, which later passed step by step to citizens of the town. In 1837, the vineyard area covered about 130 hectares and had fallen to around 15 hectares by 1905.
Rauenegg
The Rauenegg is documented as a single-vineyard site with around 2,500 square metres of vineyard area and an altitude of about 525 metres above sea level. The steep vineyard requires extensive handwork. Müller-Thurgau and Spätburgunder are grown; a Spätburgunder red wine and a Secco are documented. The 2024 Ravensburg Rauenegg was recognised as a German Qualitätswein.
