Location on the Moselle
Pommern is an Ortsgemeinde in the district of Cochem-Zell in Rhineland-Palatinate and lies on the Moselle. The village is situated on what, according to the municipality, is the longest south-facing slope of the Moselle. Above the Moselle near Pommern rises the archaeological site of Martberg, around 180 metres.
Vine growing and individual vineyard sites
Pommern belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, whose steep sites and river valleys offer favourable conditions of warmth and rainfall for wine growing. Within the municipality’s area, the individual vineyard sites Rosenberg, Goldberg, Sonnenuhr and Zeisel are recorded.
Soils and grape variety
The Pommern Goldberg has a soil with a deep, south-facing orientation, formed from weathered greywacke. The Rosenberg is documented as a steep greywacke site facing south. For the vineyards Rosenberg, Sonnenuhr, Goldberg and Zeisel, Riesling is given as the most important grape variety. The areas under vines total 15.2 hectares in the Rosenberg, 5.8 hectares in the Goldberg, 17.4 hectares in the Sonnenuhr and 5.6 hectares in the Zeisel. Wines from the Goldberg are described as fruity, aromatic and spirited.
History and wine law
Historical finds indicate Celtic settlement in Pommern more than 2,000 years ago. According to local history, the Romans cultivated wine and fruit here; the name of the place is linked to the Latin term for fruit garden. The four individual vineyard sites are entered as official vineyard names in the vineyard register for the Mosel growing area. Mosel is a protected designation of origin under European Union wine law.
