Rosenberg

Location and extent

The Pommerner Rosenberg is a vineyard site in the Mosel, stretching across the municipalities of Pommern and Klotten. It lies between the two towns behind the railway line and can be reached via narrow railway underpasses.

Topography and soils

The site, covering around 3.0 hectares, forms a long, steep slope facing south, with terraced sections of vineyard. The gradient is more than 60 percent. The soils consist of stony, skeletal-rich slate weathering soils and are medium-depth in the lower slope areas. Weathered greywacke slate is documented as the parent material.

Grape variety and wine

Riesling is the most important grape variety associated with the Pommerner Rosenberg. The wines made from it are described as elegant. A documented Riesling from the 2013 vintage was a dry Mosel quality wine with 4.5 g/l residual sugar, 7.5 g/l total acidity and 13.0 percent by volume of alcohol.

Historical features and cultivation

Individual dry stone walls and stairways form part of the site as elements of historic cultural landscape. An intact, rootable Riesling planting is dated to around 1860. For the documented 2013 vintage, the grapes were selectively hand-picked; the yield was 30 hectolitres per hectare, and the proportion of grapes affected by botrytis was about 40 percent. The must was processed without maceration time on the skins and, after clarification before fermentation, was filtered.
