Zeisel

Site and geology

Zeisel is a single vineyard in Pommern in the Mosel wine region. The south-facing vineyard area lies on the steep southern slope between Pommern and Klotten and has a gradient of 15 to 55 per cent. On around 6.5 hectares, vines grow on deep, stony greywacke and weathered Devon soils.

Grape variety and wine styles

Riesling is the most important grape variety documented for Zeisel. Bottlings from the site include Riesling Spätlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese. Sweet, delicately off-dry and dry Rieslings are also documented, including a sweet Riesling Spätlese from the 2023 vintage and a delicately off-dry Riesling Auslese from the 2018 vintage.

History and cultivation

Zeisel is listed on a historic Mosel wine map for the administrative district of Koblenz from 1897 among the vineyards of Pommern. The grapes are hand-harvested and processed by a Pommern winery. Because of the steep vineyards that are inaccessible to machinery, most of the work is carried out manually; in addition, traditional fall-line training and increasingly cross terraces are used.
