Location and landscape
Ottersweier is a municipality in the southern part of the Rastatt district and lies predominantly in the Offenburg Rhine plain. The western area belongs to the Middle Badensian Rhine plain with low terraces, damp lowlands and meadows. In the east, the municipal area extends into the foothill zone and the uplands of the northern Black Forest. The elevation ranges from about 125 metres in the west to just under 1,036 metres in the east.
Winegrowing in Ottersweier
Vineyards are cultivated and developed on municipal territory. The winegrowing area extends along the pre-Black Forest foothills from Ottersweier towards the Murg valley and belongs to the Ortenau winegrowing region within Baden, which is assigned to the EU winegrowing zone B. In 2022, 24 hectares planted with vines were recorded in Ottersweier, of which 10 hectares were with white and 14 hectares with red varieties.
Aspichhof and Althof
The Aspichhof in the Hub district documents a history of around 700 years and a long-established winegrowing tradition. The vineyard sites have weathered sandstone as well as loess-clay deposits and feature an almost Mediterranean climate. Among others, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Dorsa, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and other Pinot varieties are grown. Dry Riesling, delicately vinous Rivaner and dry Weißburgunder are documented.
The Althof at the Aspichhof comprises ten hectares owned by the Rastatt district; the wines are developed by the Affentaler winegrowers’ cooperative in Bühl. As winegrowing practices, natural tillage, quality-oriented vine care and targeted yield reduction are documented.
