Osthofen lies on the edge of the Rheinhessen Hills near the Seebach. The vineyards form a hilly landscape. The mild climate is described as favourable for wine growing.
Wine growing in Osthofen
The town has a documented wine-growing history of more than 1,300 years. Today, more than two million vine stocks grow in Osthofen, cared for by local winegrowers. Wine tastings take place both at wineries and in the vineyards.
Vineyard sites and soils
The named Osthofen vineyard sites belong to the Wonnegau area and to the Großlage Pilgerpfad in Rheinhessen. The Osthofener Goldberg covers 63 hectares, lies at an altitude of 92 to 131 metres, and has an orientation that turns from south to east. The site is described as a limestone site with loess-Pararendzina. The Osthofener Hasenbiß covers 59 hectares and has loess-colluvia with soil rich in humus and very good rooting depth.
History and wine profile
Osthofen was first documented in 784 in the Lorscher Codex as Osthofen, then ostova. At the Goldberg, Riesling is particularly associated with cool, saline mineral character; Chardonnay and other grape varieties are also grown there.
