Rheinberg

Location and name

Rheinberg is an officially listed single vineyard in the municipality of Osthofen. It belongs to the Wonnegau and to the Großlage Pilgerpfad. The name is described as a new collective designation for a hill located towards the Rhine.

Soil and site

The soil consists of loess over pararendzina, which was formed from calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Ages. The profile is fertile, deep-rooting, light loam with a clayey silty texture. It is calcareous, rich in nutrients, well penetrable by roots and sufficiently aerated, and it has a high capacity for storing plant-available soil water.

Climate and viticulture

The vineyards near Osthofen are located in a dry and sunny part of the Wonnegau. For the site, an average of around 550 millimetres of annual precipitation, just under 1,600 hours of sunshine and a vegetation period of around 240 days are given. Thanks to the deep loess soils, the vines can also survive dry years without irrigation.

Wine style

With Osthofener Rheinberg, yellow-fruited aromas are combined with notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. The style is described as slender and refreshing, with mild acidity and medium body. As a wine specific to this vineyard site, a dry Gewürztraminer from the 2020 vintage is documented, with 6.4 g/l residual sugar, 5.8 g/l acidity and 14 % alcohol.
