Location and classification
Hasenbiß is a wine-growing site in Osthofen in the Wonnegau, a sub-region of Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Grosslage Pilgerpfad and the single vineyard Rheinberg. The 2024 wine-growing register lists Hasenbiß as a single vineyard with register number 730619 and a planted area of 59.2 hectares.
Name and soils
The regional wine authority describes Hasenbiß as a new collective designation for a hill located towards the Rhine. Documented are loess and colluvial soils with a humus-rich topsoil and very good rootability.
Wine profile
The official profile describes wines with incorporated, buffered acidity, as well as aromas and taste notes of yellow fruit, apple, pear, peach, chalk and smoke. On the palate, they initially present as sleek and linear; when ripe enough, the fruit comes through expressively.
Documented wines and history
From the site, dry Chardonnay bottlings from the Ahl Margaretenhof winery and dry Merlot bottlings from the Wechsler Erben winery are documented. A historical study of field names identifies Hasenbiß as a small vineyard area on the slope west of the road to Mettenheim; the name is recorded for the years 1622/23, 1638 and 1659, while the spelling Hasenbiß appears in later cadastral records.
