Location on the Main
Ochsenfurt lies on the Main in the Franconian wine region. The Herrenberg is located in the right-bank district of the town, Kleinochsenfurt, on the south-facing slope of the Main valley. The vineyard areas are spread out north of the built-up area, at the northern exit of Kleinochsenfurt, across several plots.
Soil and climate
The vines on the Kleinochsenfurt Herrenberg grow on shell limestone soils. Ochsenfurt and Mainfranken are described as sunny and relatively low in rainfall; at the same time, heavy downpours, hail and winter storms can occur.
Viticulture and history
The Herrenberg is Ochsenfurt’s documented, separate wine-growing site and is associated with viticulture in Kleinochsenfurt. In the late 1970s, the vineyard area was reorganised: the lower slope was prepared for cultivation, while the upper part was designated as a nature conservation area. Documented grape varieties include, among others, Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner, Weissburgunder, Scheurebe, Domina and Spätburgunder. Earlier names for parts of the area were Kirchberg, Tannenflecken, An der Warth and Neu(en)berg. A local tradition links early viticulture in Kleinochsenfurt with the holy Thekla and the planting of a vine in the eighth century.
Wine style
Documented are dry and off-dry white wines, including Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner Kabinett. An Ochsenfurt town wine of the 2024 vintage is described as a dry Silvaner from the Grünewald winery for 2026 and is bottled in a Bocksbeutel. A Silvaner from the Herrenberg was also matured on the lees for a longer period before secondary aromas developed.
