Location and Landscape
The Herrenberg, locally also known as the Kleinochsenfurter Herrenberg, is located in the Kleinochsenfurt district of Ochsenfurt in the wine-growing region Franken. The vineyard site extends north of the built-up area over several parcels on the right bank of the Main. It lies on the south side of the Main slope and is described as a sun-exposed vineyard directly by the Main valley.
Soil and Grape Varieties
The Herrenberg is characterised by shell limestone soil. Along the wine path through Kleinochsenfurt, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Scheurebe are presented. In local descriptions, Riesling, Bacchus, Kerner, Weißburgunder, Traminer, Domina and Spätburgunder are also named as cultivated grape varieties.
Wines
From the Kleinochsenfurter Herrenberg, dry and semi-dry white wines are documented, including Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner. A described Müller-Thurgau was listed as a dry white wine with a floral and muscat-like aroma. A Silvaner from the Kleinochsenfurt wine tradition was aged for a longer period on the lees before secondary aromas developed.
Name and Classification
The name Herrenberg is explained locally by the earlier ownership of the vineyards by high-ranking gentlemen. Previously, among other names, Kirchberg, Tannenflecken, An der Warth and Neuenberg were used in connection with the area. The Bavarian vineyard directory lists Herrenberg in Ochsenfurt and Kleinochsenfurt as a legally recognised designation for vineyard sites; certain parcels are also assigned to the Großlage Ölspiel. Since 2010, Ochsenfurt has been presenting annually, together with the Kleinochsenfurt winemakers, a town wine from the local wine-growing tradition.
