Location and landscape
Obernbreit is located in Franconia in the valley of the Breitbach. The Breitbach flows through the town and flows into the River Main in the neighbouring market town of Marktbreit. The municipality belongs to the Main Franconian plateaux natural region group and to the Ochsenfurt and Gollach district unit.
Relief and geology
The municipal area extends from about 195 metres above sea level in the Breitbach valley to more than 270 metres on the northern and southern high plateaux. The town itself lies at about 202 metres. Geologically, Upper Muschelkalk and Lower Keuper from the Triassic are found; in places, the Keuper high plateaux are overlain by loess and loess clay.
History of viticulture
Viticulture in Obernbreit has been documented since the 13th or 14th century. During the period of the Margraves of Ansbach-Brandenburg, more than 100 hectares of vineyard area were recorded on the slopes of Obernbreit’s cadastral district. By 1940, due to low yields, vine diseases, phylloxera and weak demand on the market, the vineyard area had declined to about 15.5 hectares.
Obernbreit Kanzel
The replanting began in 1978 with a planting covering 0.7 hectares. In the years 1982, 1983 and 1990, the contiguous vineyard facility Kanzel was created in sections, with 24.4 hectares. There is a varietal teaching path there, laid out by the local winemakers’ association. In the official Bavarian vineyard register, Kanzel is entered as the vineyard site name for Obernbreit in the MainSüden area and in the Großlage of Hofrat.
