Location and orientation
Kanzel is an officially registered wine-growing site in Obernbreit in the MainSüden area of the Franconian wine-growing region. The vineyards begin at the edge of the town and look out over the Breitbach valley to the foothills of the Steigerwald. The slopes are oriented to the south.
Soils and climate
The site forms the transition from shell limestone to Keuper. Its soils are described as deep. The open exposure and cool nights influence the wines; dry periods cause only a few problems, thanks to the deep soils.
Development of the vineyards
The contiguous vineyard was laid out in three sections in 1982, 1983 and 1990 and covers a total of 24.4 hectares. After the decline in wine-growing, as part of land consolidation in 1978, an initial replanting of 0.7 hectares had taken place.
Historical and legal classification
Wine-growing in Obernbreit has been documented since the 13th or 14th century. During the rule of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach, there were more than 100 hectares of vineyard area on the slopes of the municipality. The designation Kanzel Obernbreit is entered in the official Bavarian wine-growing sites directory as an approved geographical indication for quality wines and wines with Prädikat.
