Location and Landscape
Merxheim is a municipality in the wine-growing area Nahe in Rhineland-Palatinate and lies on the Nahe Wine Route. The municipality belongs to the Bad Kreuznach district and covers around 1,700 hectares. On the uplands of the Merxheim cadastral area, documented burial mounds indicate historical settlement on the elevated terrain.
Climate
The Nahe wine-growing region, to which Merxheim belongs, is characterised by a mild and balanced climate with relatively little frost. The Hunsrück heights protect against cold winds.
Winegrowing
In the official directory of wine-growing sites, the individual Merxheim sites Hunolsteiner, Römerberg and Vogelsang are listed. For 2024, the register records 4.4 hectares of planted vineyard area in Hunolsteiner, 5.5 hectares in Römerberg and 13.1 hectares in Vogelsang. Herrenzehntel is documented as a Nahe individual site in the cadastral area of Weiler near Monzingen; Merxheim is among the associated places.
History and Wine Style
Merxheim was first mentioned in a document in 1061; the settlement is described as a Frankish foundation. The present form of the name appears in a document from 1128. In the Nahe region, predominantly white wines are produced, alongside red wines. Riesling is the predominant grape variety; in addition, Burgundy varieties such as Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder are widespread.
