Location and landscape
Margetshöchheim lies on the Main River to the north-west of Würzburg in Lower Franconia and is part of the middle Main valley. The Main forms the eastern municipal boundary; the municipal territory extends from the Main floodplain to the plateau-like highlands of the Marktheidenfeld plateau.
From the Main, which is about 166 metres above sea level, the slopes rise steeply. Numerous indented hollows and ravines shape the relief. Geologically, the municipality lies on the Franconian Muschelkalk plateau with wave limestone and anhydrite. Predominant are loam, Keuper and sandy loam soils, while humus soils occur in the Main floodplain.
Vine cultivation
The Bärental vineyard is the only documented vineyard site in the municipality. It belongs to the Mittelmain area in the Franconian winegrowing region and comprises about two hectares of vineyard area. The site is on the north-facing slope of the Eichelberg near the south portal of the Eichelberg tunnel, and is named after the valley located to the north-west of Margetshöchheim.
The Bärental lies on loess loam and clay soils; white wines are grown there in particular. Historically, viticulture was the most important source of income for Margetshöchheim. From around 1830, fruit growing was established in addition, before industrialisation reduced the importance of agriculture.
Regional classification
Margetshöchheim is part of the region Franconia. The name Bärental is entered for Margetshöchheim in the official vineyard register. For wines with this geographical designation, at least 85 per cent of the grapes must come from the named site and they must meet the applicable statutory quality requirements.
