Location in the Rheingau
Lorch is a wine-growing town on the Rhine in the Rheingau. The town is situated at the confluence where the Wisper flows into the Rhine, and forms the western edge of the Rheingau wine-growing region. At the same time, Lorch is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Steep vineyards and special soils
The vineyards rise on steep slopes above the Rhine. Slate walls and terraced vineyard structures shape the wine landscape. The soils include, among other things, slate, phyllite slate, quartzite, sandstone and loess. Mild winters, warm summers, protection provided by the Taunus heights, and the Rhine’s reflection of warmth favour winegrowing.
Tradition and grape varieties
For many centuries, winegrowing has been an important economic sector in Lorch. The first documented mention dates back to the year 1085 and already refers to a vineyard for red wine. Today, Riesling and Spätburgunder are among the most important grape varieties in the local vineyards.
Wine style of the sites
The Lorch Rieslings are described as particularly fine, while Spätburgunder is produced in different styles. The Pfaffenwies stands for elegant wines with pronounced acidity and good ageing potential. In the Kapellenberg, elegant fruit and balanced acidity come together. The Krone brings together fruit, spice and acidity; the Schloßberg is known for spicy wines with acidity and floral aromas.
