Location and classification
The Kapellenberg is a vineyard site in Lorch in the winegrowing region Rheingau. The VDP lists the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with a classified area of 2.93 hectares.
Topography and soils
The site, which faces south to south-west, is located at an altitude of 110 to 180 metres and has slope gradients of 10 to 45 per cent. The soils mentioned are slate, sand and loam; the regional description cites mostly loess, which is strongly mixed with Hunsrück slate.
Varieties and wine style
Riesling and Spätburgunder are listed as classified varieties. The wines from this area are described as having elegant fruit and well-balanced acidity and are considered to be somewhat more full-bodied than the wines from Lorchhausen.
Name and land consolidation
The name of the site is connected with the St Mark’s Chapel. The Kapellenberg belonged to the important vineyard sites of Lorch that were included in a closed land consolidation project. In the process, among other things, plots were rearranged, rope-drawn vineyards in direct mounting sites or cross terraces were converted, access was improved and measures against erosion and for water management were implemented. Cross terraces served as a pilot measure for the cultivation of steep vineyard sites and the reduction of erosion.
