Location and classification
Bodental-Steinberg is a single vineyard in Lorch in the Rheingau. It lies directly on the Rhine within the Lorch winegrowing area. In the Hessian vineyard register, the site is listed as a single vineyard within the Großlage Lorcher Burgweg and the Johannisberg area. The double name was created by the merging of two neighbouring vineyards.
Topography and soils
A documented parcel of Bodental-Steinberg is located on a steep site; the vine rows are aligned along the fall line. The Rhine influences the winegrowing climate in Lorch through heat storage and reflection, while the steep slopes increase the amount of sunshine. The soils include slate, sandstone and quartzite. As characteristic, purple phyllite slate with portions of quartzite is also described.
Grape varieties and wine style
The classified grape varieties listed are Riesling and Spätburgunder. The wines are described as powerful, dense and full-bodied, with pronounced acidity. For their complete development of the spectrum of aromas, they may require one to two years.
Classification and cultivation
The VDP lists Lorcher Bodental-Steinberg as a VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 17.84 hectares. A documented demonstration parcel was planted with a compact Spätburgunder clone. In addition, Bodental-Steinberg formed part of a project on integrated plant protection practice from 2014 to 2018.
