Krone

Site and Climate

The Lorch Krone is a vineyard site in Lorch within the wine-growing region Rheingau. It is oriented to the south-west; for the classified area, the VDP records a south-south-westerly orientation and a slope of 5 %. The slopes are described elsewhere as being up to 50 %.

The Rhine provides a warming, temperature-balancing local climate. Its light is reflected onto the vineyards and contributes to heat storage, while the rising, wooded Rheingau slopes protect the vines from cold air.

Soils and Grape Varieties

The documented soils consist of Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite. In addition, clay is mentioned in connection with Taunus quartzite and slate. As classified grape varieties, the VDP lists Riesling and Spätburgunder.

Wine Style and Classification

The wines are shaped by the interaction of fruit, spice and acidity. In good vintages, pronounced acidity forms the backbone. The Lorcher Krone is classified as a VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; the classified area comprises 9.78 hectares.

The site was documented in 1339, 1449 and 1458 under the name “an den cronen”. The name is either linked to an old house name in Lorch or to a distinctive tree crown or rock formation. The protected designation of origin Rheingau includes the cadastral areas of Lorch and Lorchhausen.
